Applications: Freeze Dryers
Lyophilisation of Traditional Chinese Medicine decoctions
Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM) are usually prepared by mashing and boiling in water. This process is called decoction. Thereby, health beneficial compounds are extracted from herbal and plant material. If not directly administered, these extracts can be preserved for a longer shelf life using lyophilisation. In this Short Note we highlight the lyophilisation procedure of Tianma Gouteng Yin (TGY), as a TCM model decoction. TGY is a widely used medicine applied to treat Parkinson’s disease (PD) like symptoms. Recently, it has been reported that this TCM decoction exerts neuroprotective effects in animal and cell models of PD.
Lyophilization of Giloy stem
In traditional Indian medicine, Giloy is one of the most useful ayurvedic herb. Freeze drying is evaluated as a drying method in order to preserve Giloy properties. Freeze drying is known to be one of the most appropriate method for the preservation of natural and biological materials thanks to the oxygen free environment and the low operating temperatures.
The use of organic solvents in laboratory freeze-dryer
Freeze-dryers were initially intended to be used with water as a solvent. With new applications, freeze-drying is consequently being used more and more in combination with organic solvents instead of water. Organic solvents and inorganic acids and bases are often used in research and development prior to lyophilisation of the sample. The behavior of these new types of samples during freeze-drying must therefore be considered prior to the process.
